In observance of Pride Month, we invite you to join us for a powerful and thought-provoking evening of reflection, learning, and community engagement. The Richmond Chapter of the Urban Financial Services Coalition, in partnership with the NAACP Henrico Branch, the Virginia Center for Inclusive Communities, the LGBTQ+ Chamber of Commerce, and Firehouse Theatre, is proud to present a special screening of the documentary The Lavender Scare, followed by a facilitated community dialogue
The Lavender Scare is the first documentary to expose the U.S. government’s decades-long campaign to purge gay and lesbian employees from federal service. Sparked by President Eisenhower’s 1953 executive order declaring them a threat to national security, this dark chapter in American history led to thousands losing their livelihoods, solely because of their sexual orientation.
But this tragedy also sparked resilience. Harvard-trained astronomer Frank Kameny, one of those unjustly dismissed, transformed his personal fight into a pioneering movement for LGBTQ rights. His story is a powerful reminder of the dangers of prejudice and the enduring power of one person’s voice for justice.
